Latvia’s government to impose sanctions against nearly 30 Belarusian officials

The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to impose travel restrictions against specific Belarusian officials, as media representatives were told by Latvia’s Prime Minister KrišjānisKariņš on Tuesday, 25 August.

Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said Latvia will establish travel restrictions for nearly 30 Belarusian officials accused of fabricating election results and who are responsible for using violence against peaceful protesters.

According to the minister, sanctions will mostly apply to approximately 30 Belarusian officials within President AleksandrLukashenko’s office, the Central Election Commission, Interior Affairs Ministry and Security Committee.Rinkēvičs refrained from clarifying which Belarusian officials will be denied entry to Latvia. Nevertheless, he and his Estonian colleague plan to announce the list jointly on Thursday, 27 August.
