Withdrawal of Lithuania from BRELL reserve agreement

As Belarus gears up for the launch of the Astravyets nuclear power plant, Lithuania that  it will not exchange emergency reserves through the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant with the countries of the so-called BRELL ring, which, besides Lithuania, includes Latvia, Estonia, Russia and Belarus. Lithuania’s power transmission company Litgrid says it has found another way of securing that assistance – via its links with Sweden and Poland. PM Saulius Skvernelis has said this week that the Baltic countries may sign in the near future a political declaration that will commit them to not buying electricity from Belarus once it launches the Astravyets nuclear power plant.
