Boris Johnson says UK ‘might have done things differently’ on exams

Boris Johnson has admitted that with hindsight the government “might have done some things differently” with exam results, after the row pushed his education minister to the brink.

He also stressed that “schools are safe” ahead of the return to classrooms next week, while leaving the door open to changing the advice on wearing face masks in school after Scotland made masks or coverings compulsory in school corridors.

The government and Education Secretary Gavin Williamson bowed to political pressure and U-turned on the algorithm which downgraded the exam results of thousands of students last week, following public outrage and student protests.

Sally Collier, the head of England’s exam regulator, Ofqual resigned later Tuesday following sustained criticism of the handling of exam results.
