On 7 December 2020, German Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Lars Patrick Berg of the Identity and Democracy Group posed a written parliamentary question to the Vice-President of the Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell:

“The recent demonstrations against the Cuban Government in Havana have been marked by widespread support among Cuba’s professional classes.

Does the VP/HR have any plans to engage with the Cuban opposition?”

On 29 January 2021, High Representative and Vice-President Borrell responded on behalf of the European Commission stating: “The services of the High Representative/Vice-President, both in Brussels and Havana, engage with the whole breadth of Cuban civil society actors on a regular basis. This includes the San Isidro movement, whose actions triggered the recent demonstrations in Havana.”
