The new Riga City Council needs to form a dialogue between the coalition and opposition, believes the leader of the winner of snap elections Attīstībai/Par!/Progresīvie political parties association (APP) and its mayoral candidate Mārtiņš Staķis.
Looking at the recent political events, it is no impossible one of the government parties could end up outside Riga City Council coalition. However, right now there are no signs to suggest this could happen.
On Monday, 31 August, there will be Riga City Council coalition composition talks organized at 12:00 at the City Hall, APP representatives say. The first set of talks will be held between representatives of APP and New Unity, followed by talks between APP and New Conservative Party and talks between APP and National Alliance All for Latvia – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK and Latvian Association of Regions.
It is planned that APP list leader Mārtiņš Staķis will meet with representatives of other parties separately, not with all of them together. APP will be represented by Staķis, leader of Progressivie party Mārtiņš Kossovičs and For Latvia’s Development will be represented by Viesturs Zeps.
The leading candidate of APP’s list previously said the coalition should be composed of all parties forming the coalition and which made it to Riga City Council – APP, New Unity, National Alliance All for Latvia – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, Latvian Association of Regions and New Conservative Party. He believes the coalition should be as wide as possible in order to ensure stable operations and make decision-making processes easier.
