Sanna Marin was elected leader of Finland’s Social Democratic Party on Sunday, eight months after her appointment as the country’s prime minister.
Marin was Finland’s transport and communications minister when former Prime Minister Antti Rinne stepped down in December in the outcome of a labor dispute at the state-owned postal service. The upheaval caused Marin to depart from an EU Council meeting she was chairing in Brussels early, returning to Brussels one week later for a European Council meeting as the country’s new leader.
Marin’s is of 34 years old and the all-female leadership of her coalition government have attracted worldwide attention.
