After talks with his counterparts from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia, Foreign Minister Schallenberg visited Switzerland to meet with representatives of the German-speaking neighbouring countries. Together with his counterparts from Switzerland, Ignazio Cassis and from Liechtenstein, Katrin Eggenberger, and the regional representatives from Baden-Württemberg, the Canton of Thurgau and the Province of Vorarlberg, Foreign Minister Schallenberg emphasised the excellent and pragmatic cooperation between the four countries during the COVID19 crisis.
The crisis has shown how important open borders are. Not only for the economy, but also for the people.
said the host of the meeting, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
Since cooperation on the movement of people and goods at the borders worked very well during the COVID19 crisis, the next major challenges, said Foreign Minister Schallenberg, were the further opening of borders with third countries and the boosting of the economy. The representatives from Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein agreed that caution must be exercised in all relaxation steps in the coming weeks and that the danger of a second wave must not be disregarded.
The European pulse rate is slowly beginning to normalise again, but we must remain vigilant.
said Alexander Schallenberg.
