On 23 November 2020, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs): Roman Haider and Georg Mayer of the Identity and Democracy Group posed a written parliamentary question to the European Commission:
“The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) provides assistance to EU Member States in carrying out deportations and other transfers of illegal migrants to their home countries.
1. In how many deportations or other transfers of illegal migrants to their home countries was Frontex involved in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020?
2. How many of these measures were ‘returns’ and how many were ‘voluntary returns’?
3. How many of these migrants made a further attempt to enter an EU Member State illegally in subsequent years?”
On 3 February 2021, Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson responded on behalf of the European Commission stating: “As the questions regarding ‘Frontex assistance with deportations’ fall entirely under the responsibility of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the Commission has asked the Agency to provide the details requested by the Honourable Members as soon as possible.”
