Latvia and Estonia adopts individual sanctions against Belarusian officials

Latvia and Estonia plans to introduce individual sanctions against Belarusian officials responsible for falsification of results of presidential elections and use of excessive force against peaceful protesters in Belarus.

As reported by Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, ministries of both countries have serious concerns about the presidential elections in Belarus the results of which Belarusian residents have not accepted. Latvia and Estonia urge a peaceful resolution for the crisis in Belarus.

Ministries welcome the conclusions made at the Wednesday’s meeting of the European Council and they plan to continue joint efforts by introducing individual sanctions against Belarusian officials responsible for falsification of election results and use of excessive force against peaceful protesters in Belarus. Both countries have prepared the lists of Belarusian officials.

Sanctions will include a restriction on the issue of visas. Mutual efforts towards adoption of national sanctions will happen in accordance with procedures of each country prior to the adoption of EU sanctions.
