Latvian and Estonian presidents meet in Saaremaa for discussion on security and transport

In Estonia, on Thursday, June 25, the annual summit of the presidents of the Baltic states takes place with Estonian and Latvian presidents discussing the most topical issues to the region. Lithuanian President (Gitanas Nausėda) is not taking part due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Estonian and Latvian heads of state are meeting in Kuressaare, the capital of the Saaremaa island, which this spring was the region hit the worst by the pandemic of COVID-19 in Estonia. The top subjects selected for the discussion between Latvian President Egils Levis and Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid are current issues in regional security, cyber cooperation and climate change.

auri Kuusing, President Kaljulaid’s foreign affairs adviser commented previously, “[The pandemic] has brought us even closer to each other, increased mutual trust and laid a foundation to discussing some other important questions such as energy and transport – where cooperation is unavoidable, beneficial to all and increases the security of the region”.

A welcome ceremony in downtown Kuressaare – which was selected as a venue to bolster Estonian domestic tourism in the aftermath of the pandemic – on June 25, will be followed by a tree-planting ceremony in the town’s castle and a visit to the Saaremaa Kaali meteorite crater.
