NATO aircraft keep eye on Russian fighter over Baltic Sea

NATO aircraft in Lithuania have been scrambled once last week to escort a Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea breaching flight rules, according to the Lithuanian National Ministry of Defence.

In a press release on Monday, July 13, the ministry stated that from July 6 to 12, fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states carried out one alert scramble to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On Monday, July 6 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states intercepted one SU-27 flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia with its onboard transponder off, had no pre-filed flight plan, and was not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre, according the Lithuanian National Ministry of Defence.
