Riga local election produces very low turnout

In the local government elections of the Latvian capital, a total of 171 611 people have cast their votes, making up 40,6% of eligible voters. It is the lowest turnout in municipal elections in Riga since at least 1997, according to data published by the Latvian Central Election Commission.

Information on the Riga municipal election of 1994 is not available on the web site of the Latvian Central Election Commission. In the election, held on Saturday, August 29, the number of eligible voters was 422 681.

A higher turnout in the latest Riga local government election than before was in early voting, when 81 320 people, or 19.24% of eligible voters cast their votes. To compare, in the local government elections of 2017 in Riga, 65 826 people, or 15.43%, of voters made their choice in early voting. This time in the snap election of the Riga City Council, voters had a choice between 15 candidate lists and a total of 707 candidates running for the post of a Riga councilwoman or councilman.
