In Austria, two Russian citizens have been arrested after a Chechen dissident was found killed past weekend in a town near Vienna.
The shooting in Vienna comes amid growing concern over the security of Chechen dissidents living in exile in the EU. Such crimes or attempted crimes have been committed in France and Sweden in 2020.
On Saturday, July 4, a 43-year-old man was found dead with gunshot wounds in Gerasdorf near Vienna. After that, Austrian police arrested a 47-year-old in Linz, 200km from the capital. A second Russian, 37, also from Chechnya and living in Austria, was detained on Sunday for investigations into the murder of his fellow Russian citizen.
An Austrian prosecution spokesman identified the dead man as Martin B, a critic of the Chechen government. Police added in a statement that prosecutors were seeking a court order to keep the suspect in detention.
