Russian journalist convicted of justify terrorism

A court in Russia has on Monday, July 6, found journalist Svetlana Prokopyeva guilty of justifying terrorism.

Prokopyeva is a freelance contributor for the US government-funded broadcaster and news portal Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The journalist used a radio program in 2018 to discuss the case of a 17-year-old Russian, who blew himself up at the office of the Federal Security Service, in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk.

In the trial, prosecutors asked for a long prison sentence, but the court fined Prokopyeva 500,000 Russian roubles (EUR 6,160). The journalist denied the charge and said she had been put on trial for doing her job. Prokopyeva also said she would appeal against the decision.
