On 12 December 2020, President of the European Council, Charles Michel made following remarks:
Five years since the Paris Agreements! And from Brussels, I am happy to find you in a virtual way, carrying good news, a strong message. Yesterday, the 27 European leaders met and made an ambitious, clear and precise commitment. It is the ambition to reduce our emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Exactly one year ago, in December 2019, we committed to climate neutrality in 2050. We will remain fully mobilized, because for us this is a complete paradigm shift.
And it is also the meaning of the financial agreement that has been found at the European level. EUR 1,800 billion will be mobilised over the next few years, of which at least 30% will be signed to meet this climate change challenge. For us, it is a social project, it is a project of prosperity, which is reflected in the framework of this “European Green Deal”. It is a series of ambitious measures to develop innovation, support jobs and raise the living environment.
We also want to act on the diplomatic front. We know that multilateral mobilization, international cooperation will be key. And that is why, in terms of economic partnerships and trade partnerships, we want to encourage all our partners around the world to join this same ambition.
There is a challenge for our generation: to put forward all our collective intelligence, to put forward all our determination to ensure that we live up to this challenge, to the height to mark our respect, our consideration for humanity. And for the generations that follow us.
