In eastern Ukraine, close to the territory controlled by pro-Kremlin separatists large wildfires have broken out that have taken the lives of six people and ravaged several villages.
Ukrainian authorities deployed water-bombing planes, the national armed forces and hundreds of firefighters as towns including Vovche and Smolianynove were evacuated.
High winds and soaring temperatures have helped spread the fires in the Luhansk region, near areas held by Russian-backed separatist forces.
The governor of Luhansk region, Serhiy Haydar, has alleged arson could have caused the devastation.
On Wednesday, July 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the area and promised compensation for those affected. He added that temporary accommodation would be arranged for people who had lost their homes, he said, while up to 50 million hyrvnias (1,64 million eiros) would be allocated to support victims.
