The U.N.’s climate change secretariat warned of inaction over climate change and a widening gulf between climate negotiations and societal demands.
The U.N. released an Annual Report in which it was mention that the gap between climate reality and action been wider. And never has the divide between the global negotiations and the demands of society been deeper.
The gulf between climate campaigners and negotiators was apparent at the COP25 climate summit in Madrid in December, where activists protested government inaction inside the summit halls — adding pressure to an already difficult meeting. The talks were perceived to fall short in committing countries to more stringent climate measures. Most of the rules to implement the accords were adopted at the COP24 summit in Katowice, negotiators have so far failed to agree how to use carbon markets and trade emissions credits.
