In May 2020 Latvia’s State Revenue Service (VID) commenced a criminal process on payment of envelope wages at some construction company, VID reports.
VID Tax and Customs Police performed ten searches in Riga and Jelgava as part of the criminal process, VID reports.
The service reports that during searches officers found and confiscated cash money (more than EUR 15000), as well as other evidence that will be analysed in the pre-trial investigation.
Performing pre-trial investigation activities, officers determined that the company in question did not register wages and unofficially paid wages in envelopes to nearly 30 employees last year and this year.
The extent of damages caused by unpaid taxes and state social insurance fees will be determined during the investigation. The criminal process was commenced in accordance with Section 217.1 of the Criminal Law. Three persons are recognized as suspects and they have been provided with security measures not associated with deprivation of freedom.
In the interest of the investigation no more information is provided.
The State Revenue Service considers the fight against envelope wages as one of its main priorities this year.
